Dev Log #1 Genesis
Genesis Inspiration
The initial inspiration for The Cardland Saga came from Stackland, a card-style resource management game. Each member of our development team is fond of this game, yet we all hold our unique perspectives on it. Our shared idea is that Stackland didn’t fully meet our desire for the genre. After dozens of hours of gameplay, players often find themselves with abundant resources but little to do, while still needing to pay attention to repetitive tasks.
For this, we aimed to explore the untapped potential of this game style. Utilizing the opportunity provided by our game design course’s Capstone project, we set out to bring our ideas to life.
About the Game Design
In our vision for the game, we aim to retain the card-centric style of gameplay while introducing more mechanics for players to explore, thus deepening the gaming experience. After researching other similar games, we decided to focus on two core aspects: merging and automation.
Merging
Merging will be a fundamental game mechanic, requiring players to combine multiple cards into a new single card entity. We interpret this action as symbolic of construction, equipping, or granting actions within the game.
Automation
Automation is another crucial game mechanic, inspired by resource systems in various factory and RTS games. Our goal with this mechanic is to liberate players from the repetitive and tedious aspects of resource production management, allowing them to focus more on exploring the broader joys of the game.
The Ultimate Vision
Our ultimate goal is to expand the scope of the game to encompass a vast continent, set in a fantasy medieval world of dragons and magic. This world will be home to various races, each building their own kingdoms and territories, complete with their unique conflicts and contradictions. Players will assume the role of a character within this rich tapestry of stories. Through the development of strength and accumulation of resources, players will strive to achieve their objectives. These may range from conquering the entire continent, resolving conflicts and contradictions, or simply ensuring the well-being and prosperity of their territory’s inhabitants.
For the next dev log, we gonna deep dive into the process of game mechanics development.
